What scales and what does not
Scales with area: tile, flooring, waterproofing membrane, paint, and the labour to install them.
Does not scale: the toilet, the basin, the shower or tub, the extractor fan, the taps. Nor does the number of separate trades who each have to arrive, set up, work and leave. A plumber charges for the visit as much as for the hour.
That is why the per-square-foot figure is higher in a small bathroom. Fixed costs spread over less area always produce a bigger number per foot.
Where a small bathroom does save
Genuinely: materials. A small room needs meaningfully less tile and less membrane, and if you were planning an expensive tile it is the one place where a small room lets you have it without the total running away.
Labour on those same items drops too — and labour is the part that varies by market, which our estimator adjusts using state wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the trades a bathroom actually uses, such as plumbers.
The lever that matters more than size
Keeping the drain where it is. Moving plumbing means opening the floor, and in a small room that is proportionally more disruptive, not less. Everything about scope is in what a bathroom remodel costs.
Bottom line
Expect a higher cost per square foot and a lower total. If you want the saving to be real, keep the layout and spend the difference on the tile you actually want.
